August 30, 2023 - My Own Backyard

Summer Hijinks for the Browns

If you've been a subscriber for a while, you may have expected this email to be a Supplier Showcase, but I've decided to swap those out to give you a little view into the life of your travel agent with "My Own Backyard."

Past, Present, and Future - Events on the Horizon

This summer has been a busy one - my Google calendar is full of color, with events many days of each week. But that's the way we like it in the Brown household. From the first fireworks my son has ever experienced to visiting the zoo, arboretum, our own family vacations, and heading up to the cabin with the full extended family, it's been fun. And the best is now: we're right in the midst of the Minnesota State Fair, and for the next 5 weekends the Renaissance Festival will have its gates open too! Take a look below to learn more about each of these fun seasonal festivities!

Learn more about local events

Minnesota State Fair

  • Open from August 24 - September 4

  • Hours: 7am - 11pm every day except Labor Day, Labor Day hours: 7am - 9pm

  • Tickets at the gate are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors (65+) and kids (5-12). Kids 4 and under are always free!

  • There are several discount days, be sure to check the schedule ahead of time to see if you qualify!

  • Blue Ribbon Bargain books are a great way to offset the cost of food and drink, there are a lot of great coupons in there for some of the Fair food staples.

  • Weekday mornings are slightly less busy, but be prepared for crowds by 11am or noon.

  • I highly recommend taking a park and ride bus rather than trying to park nearby.

Minnesota Renaissance Festival

  • Open weekends, Labor Day and Friday, September 29th

  • Hours: 9am - 7pm, rain or shine

  • NEW: Parking passes are required to park on the festival grounds this year. There are a limited quantity, and if they are sold out and you arrive there to park, you'll be turned away to a park and ride location.

  • NEW: Park and Ride services are $5 per adult (13+), children 12 and under are free. Every adult will receive $5 in Bus Bucks that can be used in a Festival merchandise shop on a souvenir purchase.

  • Check the website to buy parking passes or to learn more about Park and Ride lots.
