October 18, 2023 - Destination Spotlight: Brazil
Rio, Sao Paulo, and Brasilia - oh my!
Being the 5th largest country in the world means whatever I write here will be just a drop in a bucket of what could be covered, but I'll do my best. Brazil holds the title of being the most biodiverse country in the world as well, so for those flora and fauna lovers, you may want to add this country to your bucketlist. It's landmass encompasses 60% of the Amazon rainforest, the Brazilian Highlands, the Pantanal (a wetland area shared with Bolivia and Paraguay) and the Great Escarpment along the coast. Having this much of a diverse geography also means the wildlife is diverse throughout the country, with everything from jaguars to tamarins to toucans, and everything in between!
Cuisine-wise Brazil is also diverse. With influences from Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Portugal, and a large indigenous and African population, the food is unique and delicious. Check out the churrasco (or barbecue), feijoada (a rich stew and the national dish), or taste Cachaça in a Caipirinha cocktail (fermented sugarcane juice with crushed ice and limes).
Carnival
Rio de Janeiro's Carnival is the biggest Carnival celebration in the world, hosting 2 million people per day in the streets of the city. One of the biggest draws is the parade which is filled with revelers, floats, and accessories from local samba schools in the area.
Pantanal
While the Amazon is better known, the Pantanal is a wetland area with amazing wildlife viewing potential due to its wide open spaces. Boat trips and safaris (on foot or on horseback) are some of the best ways to view animals, like the giant anteater, hyacinth macaws, and caiman!
