Father-Son Trip to Croatia - 2024

Have I ever mentioned how much I love planning family trips? No? Well, I LOVE IT. It is so fun to me to plan trips where kids get to explore places far away and with a much different culture to where they live. For this client and his son, they had been dreaming of Croatia for years but had not had the opportunity to make it reality. I crafted a tailor-made itinerary based on what their interests were, and they had a wonderful time.

They started in Zagreb, exploring the city and seeing the Old Town, but also crossing over to see the New Town as well, before visiting the Mirogoj Cemetery which was largely designed by Herman Bolle in the 19th century and is a park as much as a cemetery when considering the monuments and architecture.

From Zagreb, they continued to Pula, where they encountered the remnants of Roman civilization such as a temple built to Augustus and an amphitheater which has been claimed to be constructed during Emperor Vespasian ruled and would be a contemporary of the Colosseum in Rome. Pula also has a cathedral with components spanning the 4th to 17th century.

They continued on to Split, with a stop at Plitvice Lakes National Park, a must-see natural wonder when in Croatia. In Split, they toured Diocletian’s Palace and the Cathedral of St. Domnius, which claims to be the oldest cathedral in the world. While in Split, they took a day trip to Solta Island where they learned about the special honey produced on the island (locals call it Olintio and the bees make it from rosemary plants) as well as the rich tradition of traditional olive oil production.

They took another day trip to Hvar Island, where they hiked and explored a bit. From there they continued to Dubrovnik, stopping to see Mostar & the Kravica Waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Dubrovnik, they took a city tour and also enjoyed a unique experience of kayaking along the sea walls of Dubrovnik and to the island of Lostrum. A fantastic end to a fantastic trip!
