June 19, 2024 - Destination Spotlight: Zimbabwe

Off the Beaten Path - Zimbabwe

If you're not familiar with the locations of the countries in southern Africa, you may not know where Zimbabwe lies: north of South Africa, east of Botswana, west of Mozambique and south of Zambia. For a landlocked country, it does offer a lot of water activities though - mostly due to the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. Avid whitewater rafters (and beginners alike) often come here to experience the Class 5 water on the Zambezi, and those who love to fish will travel to try their hand at catching the Tiger Fish found in that very same river.

Aside from water activities, Zimbabwe is a unique off-the-beaten-path destination in that one of it's 16 official languages is English, so you likely won't be playing charades with anyone due to language barriers. It's also different from many other African nations in that it has some ancient and medieval ruins that you can see, such as the Great Zimbabwe ruins in Masvingo. Zimbabwe is definitely a developing country in many ways, so those looking to give back to the community will find plenty of opportunities for volunteering on their trip as well.

Victoria Falls

This gigantic collection of waterfalls to the north is shared between Zimbabwe and Zambia. While many stick to the Zambian side, there are beautiful vistas on the Zimbabwean side as well!

Eastern Highlands

On the eastern side of the country lies the highlands, where the highest peak in Zimbabwe (Mount Nyangani) can be found. World's View is also here and on a clear day, you can see places as far as 40 miles away.
