April 4 - Destination Spotlight: Mongolia
Mongolia: The Land of the Blue Sky
You may have noticed that my typical Wednesday newsletter got sent on a Friday this week. That's completely due to how busy my schedule has been since Ireland! I'm a one-woman show here, and sometimes I have to make choices on what can fall behind so that I can stay caught up on the important things: client facing proposals, edits, and managing trips! Anyways, this month's Destination Spotlight is on Mongolia because I met an amazing operator at the conference in Vegas I was just at that connects people to the culture in this Asian nation.
Vast, rugged, and steeped in nomadic traditions, Mongolia is a destination unlike any other. From the rolling steppes to the towering dunes of the Gobi Desert, this country offers an adventure that feels untouched by time. Whether you're drawn by its epic landscapes, rich history, or immersive cultural experiences, Mongolia is a place where every traveler becomes an explorer.
Mongolia’s nomadic culture is deeply ingrained in daily life. Unlike the fast-paced, urbanized world of the U.S., many Mongolians still live in gers (yurts), moving with the seasons. The warmth of Mongolian hospitality is unmatched, and visitors are often welcomed into homes to share in traditional meals like buuz (dumplings) and airag (fermented mare’s milk).
Orkhon Valley
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this valley is considered the cradle of Mongolian civilization. Ride horseback through its grasslands, visit ancient ruins, and experience a true nomadic homestay.
Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag)
Famous for the discovery of dinosaur fossils, these red sandstone cliffs glow at sunset, which makes for a breathtaking experience. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers and history buffs alike.
Best time to travel
June to September for warm weather and cultural festivals like Naadam.
Recommended duration
10-14 days
Pairs well with
South Korea or China
Cost factors
A mix of budget-friendly homestays and luxury ger camps cater to different travelers. Private tours for the remote regions are recommended.
