February 19, 2025 - Destination Spotlight: Tahiti and the Society Islands

TAHITI AND THE SOCIETY ISLANDS

Tahiti, the heart of French Polynesia and part of the Society Islands, is a dream destination filled with lush mountains, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear lagoons. This South Pacific paradise offers a perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and rich Polynesian culture. Whether you're looking for an overwater bungalow escape, thrilling water activities, or cultural experiences, the Society Islands has a place to fulfill those dreams!

While Tahiti is part of France, its Polynesian roots are deeply woven into daily life. Visitors can experience the traditional Tahitian dance (Ori Tahiti), handwoven crafts, and local storytelling through mesmerizing performances. Unlike Western dining customs, meals in Tahiti often highlight communal eating with fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and the must-try dish Poisson Cru—raw fish marinated in coconut milk and lime.

The Society Islands are an island chain made up of several islands, so I recommend splitting your stay between at least two of them to get a more comprehensive experience. The lively capital of French Polynesia, Papeete, is home to the vibrant Le Marché market, local artisans, and delicious street food at roulottes (food trucks). From Papeete, Moorea is a quick ferry ride away. This neighboring island is perfect for nature lovers who enjoy hiking, snorkeling, and dolphin-watching. Just a 50 minute flight away, Bora Bora is the jewel of French Polynesia. Most people think Bora Bora and immediately they imagine luxurious overwater bungalows, but you can also visit the remains of marae, ancient temples once used by the Polynesians for religious rituals. Not sure which islands to stay on? Let's book you on a cruise that visits several!

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Home to one of the most powerful waves in the world, Teahupo’o is an iconic surf destination, attracting elite surfers for its massive swells. Even if you don’t surf, boat tours offer an incredible opportunity to witness the towering barrels up close and take in Tahiti’s dramatic coastline.

Coral Gardens, Bora Bora

Snorkel in one of the most breathtaking underwater ecosystems in French Polynesia. Located between Bora Bora’s motus (small islets), Coral Gardens offers crystal-clear waters teeming with vibrant fish, stingrays, and reef sharks. It’s a must-visit for nature lovers.

Best time to travel

May to October offers dry, cooler weather with calm waters perfect for snorkeling and diving.

10-14 days to fully explore multiple islands.

The Tuamotu Islands for untouched coral atolls or the Marquesas for dramatic landscapes and ancient petroglyphs.
