July 19, 2023 - Destination Spotlight: Czech Republic
BOHEMIAN: IT'S MORE THAN A STYLE
The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in central Europe with Prague as its capitol. The commonly used term "Bohemian" actually comes from one of the major regions within the country, Bohemia, which also originated the country's nickname of "Land of the Bohemian Crown" from the 14th century on.
Prague is the 5th most visited city in Europe (after London, Paris, Istanbul, & Rome) and has a vast array of historical sites as it suffered less damage during WWII than most other major European cities. Due to that, you can see architecture from Romanesque to Gothic, Renaissance to Modern, and many structures in between.
The Czech people are proponents of time spent in the great outdoors, and the country has many areas that attract visitors who also enjoy spending time outside. Places like the Bohemian Forest and the Giant Mountains are great spots to enjoy a good hike.
You can't talk about the Czech Republic without talking about its beer. For those who enjoy a pint or two, there are plenty to taste while you're here. Beer festivals are plentiful, and there are over 500 breweries native to the country.
Ossuary at Sedlec
This medieval Gothic chapel stands above the remains of 40,000 individuals and has some interesting bone decorations that bring over 250,000 visitors each year! This site can be combined with a visit to Prague in an easy daytrip.
Hluboka Castle in Bohemia
This castle was originally built in the later half of the 13th century in the Gothic style, but later rebuilt in the 18th century into a Baroque chateau. It contains many artifacts and artwork from the 17th and 18th century, and is another great daytrip from Prague.
