NORTHERN LIGHTS PEAKING THIS YEAR!

NASA scientists have predicted that 2024 will be "super season" for Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights - so where better to catch the painted skies than in Iceland! The best time to visit to catch a glimpse of this natural wonder is between September and April - and if you head to Iceland in December or January you may find yourself luckier to see them as there are only 4-5 hours of daylight during this time.

If the northern lights aren't your thing, Iceland definitely has plenty of other sites to catch your interest. From glaciers you can explore, to volcanoes (probably steer clear of the one that has been erupting), to hot springs, and some of the most magnificent waterfalls you'll ever see. The culture here is also very interesting, as most native Icelanders can trace their lineage back up to 1200 years using the Íslendingabók database (which actually used to just be a book, but in keeping up with the times is now also a website).

Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is a great first foray into Iceland if you don't have time/money to stay very long. It is one of the most famous scenic routes near Reykjavík and can be completed in 1-3 days. Many people choose to do a self-drive of this portion of Iceland.

Igloo/Dome Accommodations

What better way to experience the Aurora Borealis than by staying somewhere unique like this! You can open the curtains to view the night sky and stay warm and cozy in your bed as you delight in the polar lights above you.

Best time to travel

Year round - but for the Northern Lights: September - April

Recommended duration

7-10 days to see most of the island

Greenland, or does well as a stopover on a trip to Europe
