March 22, 2023 - Destination Spotlight: Colombia

COLOMBIA

Colombia is found in the northwest corner of South America, is the 4th largest country in South America, and is the only country to border BOTH the Caribbean and the Pacific. In the past, there were hard times when the country was subjected to drug and guerrilla warfare. However, it is now an emerging, increasingly popular tourist destination, with tons of AMAZING immersive experiences available. Colombia is a geographically diverse land with terrain ranging from the Andes Mountains to attractive coastlines, rainforests and grasslands, and very biodiverse as well, with many species of plant and wildlife found in its borders. (Fun fact: you can find over 4000 types of orchids in Colombia).

Colombia is famous for coffee

Colombian coffee is some of the best in the world, and it is no wonder: all coffee grown in Colombia is still picked by hand, so each bean is at the peak ripeness and ready to be roasted and made into the delicious coffee it is known for. (I am not typically the one picking the coffee, don't worry!)

Check out the beaches too

But if, like me, coffee is not your thing, Colombia also has amazing beaches. Many people like to go up to Cartagena, but to go to a more off the beaten path beach, you can have a stop in Buenaventura on the Pacific side.

Best time to travel

Anytime - Colombia's proximity to the equator means that the temperature varies little throughout the year. To avoid rainfall during wet season, either go in January/February or July/August - but be aware, July and August will be very warm in coastal regions.

Recommended duration

10 - 14 days

Pairs well with

Ecuador

Cost factors

Once in Colombia, the rate of exchange is quite favorable to USD. This is not an expensive country.
