Packing Tips from a Seasoned Traveler

For many, packing up for a trip causes stress and anxiety - what if you forget something?! But it doesn't have to be that way. Check out these tips from someone who has taken many a trip - and even forgot important items before!

Make a list and check it twice

Lists are so helpful, particularly if you've got other things on your mind when you are packing. I make a list ahead of time, so as I think of things to pack, I can add them to the list. By the time the day comes to pack, it should be fairly easy to grab all the things. (Make sure to write your glasses on the list - this coming from personal experience!)

Buy packing cubes or compression bags

Packing cubes and compression bags help you stay organized while you're on your trip, as well as help fit the items you want to bring. I prefer compression bags myself, as they can really get a lot more clothes in the same space. The ones I linked don't require a vacuum either.

Bring a change of clothes in your carry on

No one wants to miss a connection, or have their flight canceled, but in the event that it happens, you'll be glad to have an extra pair of clothes to change into if you can't retrieve your checked luggage. Also pack some toiletries (under the 3.4 fl oz rule, of course) so you can freshen up too!

A good neck pillow is worth its weight in gold

Not all neck pillows are equal, so finding one that will allow you to get some shuteye on the flight is key. I use this one, which has stiffer memory foam to keep my head up, but I've heard good things about the TRTL too. Bring an eye mask and ear plugs too for the best rest.

Find shoes that are versatile, and lightweight!

I've never even come close to the 50 lb max that most airlines have, and I think one of the main reasons is that I like lightweight shoes, and I don't bring my whole closet full. Finding a good loafer/sneaker, sandal, and dress shoe that work is all you should need to bring.

Dress and pack with layers

Not only do I dress in layers for my flights (t-shirt or tank, light sweater, heavier sweater), but I bring clothes I can layer on most trips. You never know if there will be a brisk wind, or chilly A/C in a building, and sometimes higher elevation makes for a hotter sun than the temperature may suggest when you look at the forecast.

Pack everything into your luggage at one time

I've found that if I start packing a little at a time, I end up having to dump it all out anyways to make sure I actually packed everything I thought of. So instead, I make the list (mentioned above) and throw things into a pile until I'm ready to pack everything. Then I can play tetris to fit it all in my bags.

Pick good luggage for where you're going

Consider your luggage as you think of where you're heading. A nice rolling suitcase may be perfect for a trip to a resort, but not as good for the cobblestones of Europe or an adventure through the Amazon. When I'm traveling and needing luggage that's easier to carry, I use my Osprey backpack, similar to this one.
