September 18, 2024 - Destination Spotlight: New Zealand

Hobbits and Kiwis for miles!

Sticking with the South Pacific theme from last week, this week I'm highlighting New Zealand for the Destination Spotlight! What comes to mind when you think of New Zealand? Is it the Lord of the Rings? Is it rugby? Maybe Taika Waititi? Or perhaps you know a bit about the native Māori culture. Whatever it is, New Zealand is an amazing place to visit!

New Zealand is comprised of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, along with numerous smaller islands, New Zealand offers a diverse array of experiences. The North Island is known for its vibrant cities like Auckland and Wellington, geothermal wonders in Rotorua, and beautiful beaches. The South Island boasts majestic mountains, fjords, and pristine lakes, with Queenstown serving as a hub for adventure sports like bungee jumping and skiing.

The country is also steeped in Māori culture, offering you a chance to explore indigenous traditions, arts, and history. New Zealand's warm hospitality, known as "manaakitanga," ensures that travelers feel welcome. With a temperate climate, a wide range of activities, and relatively easy travel logistics, New Zealand is an ideal destination for nature lovers, thrill-seekers, and those looking to immerse themselves in a unique cultural experience.

Rotorua

Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland and a hub of Māori culture. The area is famous for its bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and natural hot springs. The dramatic Pohutu Geyser erupts daily. Rotorua also offers opportunities to visit authentic Māori villages, witness traditional performances, and enjoy a hangi feast cooked in geothermal steam.

Hobbiton

Hobbiton is a magical place for fans of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films. This picturesque farmland was transformed into the iconic Shire, home of the hobbits, with its charming hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and the Party Tree. You can take guided tours through the set, learning behind-the-scenes stories and marveling at the intricate details of Middle-earth.

Best time to travel

Year-round, but best timing depends on what you'd like to do while there

Recommended duration

10 - 18 days

Pairs well with

Australia or Cook Islands, if you have enough time

Cost factors

It does tend to be a more expensive vacation both due to the flight cost as well as cost of accommodations and activities
