May 15, 2024 - What to Be Planning: Holiday Travels
HOLIDAY TRAVEL - Start planning it now!
This month I recommend you grabbing your calendars and figuring out what your plans are for holiday travel - specifically Thanksgiving and Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa-time. The December holidays are a particularly popular time to travel, as many people's work slows down then and kids are off school, and with that popularity comes increased demand...and increased cost. The faster you can book those trips, the less you'll have to fight reduced availability, and the less they'll cost. For those looking to avoid the crowds and spend a little less, Thanksgiving is a great time to consider non-domestic places as the rest of the world doesn't generally have a holiday then, so you're not going with as many people! Below are a few ideas of great places to spend your holidays:
If you've never experienced a Christmas market in Europe, you're missing out! Mulled wine, unique trinkets to buy, decorations and markets---it's definitely an experience everyone should have once in their lives! Opening typically in mid-late November, your Thanksgiving trip can reduce the cost and still get you to see this special event! Kids would love it, and you can still see the typical sites in the city you choose, likely at a discounted price due to it being more of an off-season than it is in summer!
While most wouldn't think Canada in winter is a great destination, let me expand your perspective a bit! In November in Churchill you have opportunity to see polar bears in the wild as they prepare for the waters to freeze to allow them to go north. And Iceland and Scandinavia aren't the only places that get great northern lights - Canada gets 300 nights/year, making it pretty likely that you can see them in winter! And of course there are plenty of unique cultural experiences available too.
Is Machu Picchu on your bucket list? November is a great time to visit because it's at the start of the wet season, but on average, there's only 12 days of rain, and the weather is quite temperate still. Peru has a ton of festivals in November as well, so you'll get to experience a lot of the culture of the region you're visiting. The coast is still a great place to visit, as the northern shores' water is still warm and the waves are great for surfers (either to watch them or to try it yourselves!). But trekking the Inca Trail requires advance registration, so best to start planning now!
